I have taught many thousands of lessons and each one brings me unique rewards and challenges. The children and adults I teach bring me so many gifts. This must be what I am here to do.
I didn't always know teaching one-on-one was my thing. I graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1995. With my Philosophy degree, I worked for non-profits until 1999 when I discovered piano teaching. I went on to instruct independently in Carbondale, Colorado from 2001 through July, 2024. It only kept getting better. Then, my family and I relocated to Northwestern South Carolina! And that is where I am now. Brand new piano-guy in the Tryon / Landrum area. I'm reaching out to a new community, searching for my best ways to serve through my music. I can't wait to meet my new students!

A lifetime of growth and joy playing music.
That's my aim for each student. So I teach them to play musically before focusing efforts on music reading. Together, we select pieces that inspire. Technique, rhythm, theory, artistry and reading skills are all developed through playing songs and exercises. Each lesson is customized for the individual. (When two students match up well, I can teach them together.) All of my students get to experience improvisation and duet and duo playing. We also learn through hand drumming and trying out other instruments in my studio. Most students create their own songs; and many get into singing at their instrument.
Our "Performance Parties" are truly a celebration and a great demonstration of the kids' passion for music making. The kids get a valuable experience of performing for others, and they really love it!
